The ECOAN lodges perched in the Peruvian Andes immerse the visitor in scenic beauty, local culture, and authentic cuisine.  A bird watcher’s paradise and photographer’s muse, the crisp air, vibrant colors, and welcoming communities at ECOAN offers a true escape for at the top of the world.  

Here, local guides follow ancient trails through the mountains, past pristine waterfalls, glaciers, and lagoons.  You’ll want to have your binoculars handy to see hummingbirds in jewel tones, soaring condors, and iridescent quetzals.

ECOAN is a non-profit NGO dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and threatened Andean ecosystems. The ECOAN team works with local communities to protect the habitat of these species, improve the health of natural resources and restore degraded areas. ECOAN began working in Cusco 19 years ago, and now directs conservation and development projects in other regions of Peru  In addition, ECOAN is coordinating a major initiative to protect high Andean forests in 6 countries of South America.

ECOAN operates two lodges, the Owlet Lodge and the Heumbo Lodge, both ideally situated for bird watching and trekking through the Andes Mountains.

Owlet Lodge

3 CABINS. 1 RESTAURANT

Named for the the Long-whiskered Owlet (Xenoglaux loweryi), rediscovered after 35 years of having been presumed extinct, the Owlet Lodge  and research station is a premier space to explore the forests of northern Peru. 

Among the many bird species in the region are the Big lettuce lettuce (Xenoglaux loweryii) , the chotacabras libra (Uropsalis lyra) , the Angel of the royal sun (Heliangelus regalis), the Golden-headed quetzal (Pharomachrus auriceps), the Octaceous-faced tororoi (Grallaricula ochreifrons), the Pale Beak Tororoi (Grallaria carrikeri) , Jonhson’s espatulilla (Poecilotriccus luluae) and the yellow scarf tanager (Iridosornis reinhardti).

The Owlet Lodge has three comfortable cabins, with a small lobby, spacious rooms, and bright windows to observe the scenery.

HEUMBO LODGE

8 ROOMS. 1 RESTAURANT.

Located in the Pomacochas community in Amazonas, Heumbo Lodge has spectacular scenic views of two waterfalls – “La Chinata” and “Junbilla” and more than 10 drinking fountains for hummingbirds.  It is the hub for the Vilcanota Trek, a series of trails through the Andes Mountains that wind past the rainbow mountains, Huacaywillki glacier, Pucacocha and Yanacocha lagoons.

Huembo Lodge is the favorite place for observing the wonderful spatula-tail hummingbird (Loddigesia mirabilis). Other species include Black-tailed Kites (Lesbia victoriae), the White- fronted Coquette (Chaetocercus mulsant), the Emerald Tucaneta (Aulacorhynchus prasinus), the Azara Tail-spine (Synallaxis azarea), the Rufous Belly Tapaculo (Scytalopus femoralis), and the Red-crested Cotinga (Ampelion rubrocristatus).

Heumbo Lodge has eight comfortable rooms, two double rooms with private bathrooms, two single rooms with private bathrooms, and two single rooms with a shared bathroom. The restaurant serves authentic local cuisine and seats 20 people.

BEFORE YOU GO

  1. Passport: To enter Peru, you will need a passport valid for 6 months after the date of entry.
  2. Visas: Peru is an easy country to enter. People from most countries in the Americas and Western Europe do not need a tourist visa to enter Peru. The maximum length of stay that the authorities grant to tourists is 183 days, which cannot be extended. To see a list of visa requirements by country, click here.
  3. Health Insurance Documents: Be sure to bring your insurance card and copies of any travel insurance polices you purchase for the trip.
  4. Travel Advisories: It’s also a good idea to check any travel advisories issued for Peru by visiting the U.S. Department of State website.

When travelling abroad, be sure you are up to date on routine vaccinations. Additional vaccines may also be required based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing. Check with your healthcare provider at least one month prior to departure to ensure you have all the recommended vaccinations and medications for travel to Peru.

 

Also check the CDC website for the up-to-date advice on health precautions. You may be required to get vaccinated for hepatitis A, typhoid, and  yellow-fever when travelling to certain parts of the country.

 

Since ECOAN is located at an elevation of over 4,000 meters / 13,100 feet above sea level, you might want to talk to your doctor about travel at higher elevations.

While much of northern Peru operates on the same plug shape as the United States (Type A), parts of the region and most of southern Peru use what’s known as C-type outlets and the entire country runs on 220-volt currents, which is higher than America’s 110-volt standard. Be sure to get the right adapter before you go and check your devices to see if you also need a voltage converter.
